The Cathar castles

Born shortly after the year 1000, Catharism is a religious movement that was concentrated in the South of France, particularly in the Midi-Pyrénées. The region was the main home of the Cathars. It was also their refuge when the Church chased them to the heights of Montségur.

The vineyards of Cabardes, Minervois and Corbieres

The AOC (protected designation of origin) Cabardès in which the Domaine de la Vitarelle is located, is an amphitheatre leaning against the Montagne Noire overlooking Carcassonne. This appellation extends over 450 hectares. The vines face due south, on a long slope irrigated by six rivers. The vineyard produces about 29,600 hectolitres of wine per year. The Mediterranean-type climate is characterized on this terroir by refreshing mountain currents and by the massive presence of olive trees at the western end of the vineyard. The soils are composed of limestone known as Ventenac and alveoline-type limestone silts. The AOC Cabardès wines are made from a combination of Grenache, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They allow the elaboration of wines that combine the elegance of oceanic vineyards and the structure of sunny wines. These wines with a thick and rich taste have tannins that are very present but also very delicate.
